Astonishing release by French trio Clan Edison. Clan Edison are Sylvain Arnal on guitar and vocals, Harold Martinez on bass and vocals and Fabian Toulouse on drums. The Clan, from Nimes, formed in 2003, released their debut full-lenght in 2007, but they released a couple maxi's as well. They create a powerful and heavy, bluesy rock mixture where you can feel the influences of Fugazi and the Gun Club, but you'll hear the spirit of Nick Cave and Madrugada as well ... and some of the lyrics are in French. Superb album.

The Ribeye Brothers - New Ways to Fail (2009)

First of all, The Ribeye Brothers are vocalist Tim Cronin and guitarist John Kleiman (both of Monster Magnet fame!). You can discribe their sound like a bad trip between the 60's pop & psychedelica of The Monkees and 13th Floor Eleveators and some bad ass country cowpunk kind of thing. 'New Ways to Fail' is the Brothers' last album, which was (self) released in 2009, their previous albums are 'Bar Ballads and Cautionary Tales' (2005) and 'If I Had a Horse', released in 2002. Enjoy.

Here's the debut album by a brand new UK based quintet, Kill it Kid, released on One Little Indian. Their heady melange of delta-blues and rootsy folk will some of you really enjoy. The album opens with a real blues-rocker, 'Heaven Never Seemed So Close', where a fuzzy slide guitars battles with a glassy violin, on 'Troubles Of Loretta' you'll hear rockabilly, or the swinging bluegrass of 'My Lips Won't Be Kept Clean', anyway, this is a varied album, with influences going from rock to blues and folk.

Hell's Kitchen - Doctor's Oven (2006)

Hell's Kitchen is a Geneva-based trio, they bring a hilarious style of blues, with a varied use of instruments, alternating from acoustic to electric guitar to banjo, slide to harp, spare drums to trash can percussion and a 'washtub' bass instead of a traditional bass.

It's not easy to try and make any comparisons, but Tom Waits jamming with The Experimental Tropic Blues Band is a nice start. Enjoy!

Started in 2003 Hyacinth House was Mack Johansson's solo project, but he was joined by fellow musicians ( up to 17!) when he released his self-titled debut in 2005, followed by 'Black Crows' Country' in 2007. Black Crows' Country is an intriguing and dark album with an angry combination of folk, rock and country. Whether it's an electric guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, harmonica or cello, this Swedish sextet use it with such a passion... Highly recommended!

Thanks to 'Croooww' for introducing me into this amazing band, I've been listening to this all days since I got this. Here's Tennessee-based Creech Holler, a trio playing such a thrillin' mixture of country, blues and garage... damn, it's been a while when I've heard such an intensive blues/rock album.

The dark storylines and thick, fuzzy, primitive rhythms of Creech Holler's music take you to a Mississippi delta juke joint or a mountainside in Appalachia (from their Myspace-page). Take a listen to 'Serpent King' or 'Willie Williams' for example, words are inadequate here, 'Maggie Rose', Raymond Lee' ... hey... all 11 tracks are killer...

Here's quite an unknown treasure, the debut EP by Norwegian band Vishnu. For those who never had heard of Vishnu before, they bring a dark sound which reminds me to their compatriots of Madrugada, My Midnight Creeps and Ricochets, which isn't quite a surprise, 'cause the band had teamed up with some members of these bands. I didn't find more info about 'em, I don't even know if they have released a full-lenght so far, but I've read that they'll release an album in March 2010. Meanwhile, enjoy this 5 track EP.

Dropped in my mailbox, here's a new band from Norway. They wrote: St Satan is a hard rock band based in Bergen, Norway. The members are a tasty blend of veterans of the hard rock/metal scene (Borknagard, The Batallion, The Swamp Babies, Lost at Last) and prominent members of the jazz/noise/experimental scene (Krøyt, Skomsork, Trio Gud, Jazkamer, Public Enema), belting out groovy hard rock tunes in the vein of Clutch, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jesus Lizard, Kyuss and Ted Nugent. The album "Horns for adornment" features ten hardhitting, dynamic tracks, presented by the band as a unit, recorded with all five members playing at the same time in the same studio. Just like the old jazz classics.The album was recorded, mixed and mastered in less than 10 hours (!) on the 6th of February 2010 at Duper Studios by Jørgen Træen and Iver Sandøy.

Here's a reissue of Joe Buck's debut album, originally released in 2004, but re-released in 2007, although it consists some different tracks on both albums. I would like to thank the 'Croooww' and 'Good Music Stuff' for this 2007 release. Here's his biography and a brief description I made for Joe's first release.

The once anti-Nashville Joe Buck gained notoriety as the guitarist of Th' Legenday Shack Shakers. As Hank III's villianous sideman, the snarling upright bass player became infamously recognizable. Joe Buck Yourself is now a bonefide evil motherfucking, one man band. This unique blend of hellbilly punkrock ain't your grandma's hillbilly music. Joe Buck Yourself, mother fuckers! This is a pure 'motherfucking' Western hellbilly garage punkrock album, or imagine the mighty Cramps fronted by Hank Williams, it blow your head off immediately. Requested.

River City Tanlines - All 7 Inches Plus 2 More (2004)

For this I would like to thank Benji, this is a damn fine album which I received last weekend, thx. River City Tanlines is one of the many outlets of Alicja Trout's talents. Alicja plays with bands such as the Lost Sounds and Mouserocket, she also runs a label (Contaminated Records) and a recording studio as well!!! This is their debut CD, it's a compilation of their 3 previously released and impossible to find 7"s ( an edition of 300 on Italy's Goodbye Boozy Records, an edition of 700 on Nashville's Misprint Records, and an edition of 500 on Alicja's own Contaminated Records) plus 3 brand new tracks, released to coincide with RCTL's first ever European tour!. Here's a brief bio of RCTL I've found:

Taking their cues from 1970s punk, Runaways-influenced hard rock, and North Mississippi blues, the River City Tanlines formed from the ashes of several local bands in Memphis, TN. Singer/guitarist Alicja Trout -- an established songwriter with ties to such Memphis-based groups as the Lost Sounds, Destruction Unit, Black Sunday, and Mouserocket -- founded the trio in the early 2000s with help from bassist Terrence Bishop and drummer John Bonds, both of whom had previously played alongside Delta blues artists. The band's synthesis of punky blues and garage rock found a devoted audience in Memphis, and the River City Tanlines captured their craft on albums like I'm Your Negative.

The Black Diamonds - The Black Diamonds (2006)

If you dig The Suede Brothers, than you should check this as well. The Black Diamonds were formed in Cleveland, Ohio, somewhere mid 2004, consisting two members of The Suede Brothers (Kevin Naughton on bass and Dylan Francis on guitar and vocals). Their self titled release is a giant slab of churning guitar chords that chug along like a freight train melting the tracks in its path. Think Black Sabbath meets Led Zeppelin by way of the White Stripes and the end result is a 70's blues based rock and roll sound. These youngsters have swiped the best elements from all that rotten '70's rock (hard rock, garage,...), personalized it and made it their own. Fuzzy guitar riffs and vocal hooks spread like a virus throughout the whole album. They sadly broke up, recorded just one album, but like I wrote, two members rejoined and started a new band...The Suede Brothers (their albums are posted on this blog also).

I've presented you Zoe's debut album 'Make it Burning' a while ago, now I present you their second effort, which was released October 29th. Zoe, hailing from Calais, is a high energy stoner rock'n'roll band. If you enjoyed the massive Fu Manchu- or Dozer sound on their debut album, then you should definitaly check this as well...you won't regret it! Zoë captures the essence of rock, this is rock with a capital R: 12 outstanding tracks with stoner, blues rock and heavy hi-energy rock... Highly recommended stuff

Wow, quite a surprise, it seems Scott H. Biram is planning an European tour this year, and what's suprised me even more, he's coming to my hometown (Ostend @ The Terminus), so that gives me a good reason to post his live album, entitled 'Lo-Fi Mojo' (recorded Feb 2nd@KVRX). Here's a review which I've made last year...

Biram is a one-man band, playing all his songs on a '59 Gibson hollow body. Biram's number one love is the blues. Next in line come punk, metal, country, bluegrass.... Biram offers up a unique blend of "real" country, old-school acoustic blues, and punk. With influences ranging from hardcore and metal to blues and country, Biram takes on some of America's finest music and turns it into a phenomenal mish-mash that's as dirty and raw as it is impressive.

Someone said Black Magic Six sounds like a mixture of Howling Wolf and Venom, another claims that there's some influences for The Stooges, Dead Kennedys, Sweetheart or AC/DC. They are all wrong. Black Magic Six sounds like a satan's masterplan, the organs of Stalin and a howl of a Kallio-werewolf - all mixed together. No Mercy. (from their Myspace).

Lets start on this monday morning with an 'one-woman band', and to be honest, I can't remember there are a lot 'one-woman' bands (KT Tunstall, although this has nothin' in common with KT's accoustic pop/folk approach). 'Ill Ease' is Elizabeth Sharp's brainchild, and it's an addictive, rhythm-heavy album infused with fuzzy lo-fi guitars and slippery vocals. 'All Systems A-Go-Go' is Sharp's second (regular) full-lenght, other releases are: The Exorcist (2004) and Turn It Loose (2008), Greatest Tits 12" (2003), Jersey-o-matic 7" (2003) and 'Live at the Holiday Sin' (2002). Major influences are: The Kills, PJ Harvey and Sonic Youth.

The Screws - 12 New Hate-Filled Classics (1999)

The Screws is Mick Collins' (Gories and Dirtbombs) probably most punkiest project he ever had. The band formed somewhere mid '97 and released two albums; '12 New Hate-Filled Classics' and 'Shake Your Monkey', which came out in 2001. When the 'Red Aunts' decided to produce their album in Detroit by Mick Collins, Terri Wahl (vocalist/guitarist from the Red Aunts) and Mick planned the idea to record an album. Collins and Wahl called upon Dan Brown and Marty Moore ('68 Comeback and Royal Trux) to form The Screws. They have remained primarily a side project, although they have toured to places as far away as Japan. On this album you'll hear some cover versions of Zappa, Mad and Redd Kross. Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours (2008)

Finally, back in the 'blogosphere' again and I start my free week with another unknown and promising band from Australia. 'Primary Colours' is the second full-lenght by this Melbourne-based quartet, named shortly as 'ECSR'. They started in late 2003 and consist of Eddy Current (guitar), bassist Rob Solid, drummer Danny Current and Brendan Suppression on vocals. Dominated by tough, hooky tunes, no-frills musicianship, and Brendan's broad Australian accent, the album earned enthusiastic reviews from critics with an ear for garage and postpunk sounds. This album became an unexpected crossover success, rising to number six on the Australian charts and earning ECSR a nomination for Best Rock Album of 2008 at the Australian Music Industry Awards.

Two angry young women, that's what The Suicidal Birds are all about. This female duo from Friesland (the Netherlands) consists Jessie on guitar and vocals and Chay on bass. These young 'DIY'-girls deliver a mish-mash of very intense lofi trash punk and swampblues, just armed with a distorded guitar, bass and a drum machine, it sounds a bit like PJ Harvey on speed. They've released three albums so far: 'Z-List' (2005), 'Versus Life' (2007) and 'Spend Your Life In Serious Misery' (2009).

I'd like to thank mitchtim for this, 'cause I'd never heard of this Oregon-based two man band before, and damn, what an awesome mix of country and blues they bring! Here's a brief bio I've found on the internet: Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo Hillstomp is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. For all those who loves the 'diy'-blues style, bluegrass or vintage stuff in general. Once again, thanks you very much, mitchctim.

The Chrome Cranks - Love in Exile (1996) and Live in Exile (1997)

Last studio-album by The Chrome Cranks. The Chrome Cranks were formed in Cincinnati in the late 80's. They bring a raw mixture of punk, blues and noise, think John Spencer on speed. The Chrome Cranks are reunited and performed four well received Chrome Cranks reunion shows in New York and Lyon (France) in May 2009. Currently the band is working on new material and considering offers for overseas shows in 2010.

Black Mustang - Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (2009)

I proudly present you Black Mustang, one of Brisbane’s (Australia) most exhilarating new bands, with its rawest and purest, most catchy rock 'n' roll. Black Mustang have developed an explosive live set with teenage kicks and manic pop thrills. What an exciting new R'n'R-scene there is in Australia (see Legends of Motorsport, Fumes, Blackwater Fever, The Mess Hall and lots more... and it's summertime up there right now, while we're freezing...). Going from rambunctious garage rock 'n' roll and blues to 70's glam rock, this is one of the most astonishing rock albums that I've heard in quite some time. Personally I prefer a 'black Mustang' rather than an old 'Nissan', even it's a 240Z (...which are very marvellous). Highly recommended!

The Goddamn Gentlemen - Sex-Caliber Horsepower (2001)

The Goddamn Gentlemen's debut album of jacked-up garage punk matches the in-the-red vocals of the Sonics with the high-powered proto-punk of MC5, the Stooges, and Rocket From the Tombs, adding slashing guitars and Farfisa-driven spookiness. The B-movie horror vibe is all over the creepy "Murder Man," complete with the fair warning, "I know you don't even care/But girl you better have on your clean underwear." There's a dumbfounding, innovative quality present on a few of the tracks here, as the brief and bizarre tempo shifting in songs like "Hip Snake Handler" and "Stanton St. Cruiser" will leave the listener scratching one's head, wondering what the heck just happened. "Knock-Out Drop" is another memorable moment, with its stuttering, amphetamine-induced lead guitar. The periodic addition of harp or saxophone, as well as the psychobilly-inspired side trip, "Door 34," aid in making Sex-Caliber Horsepower a refreshed and alive record. (source: cd universe)

The Chrome Cranks - The Murder of Time (1993-1996)

With their unholy mix of punk, blues, rockabilly and noise, The Chrome Cranks split the difference between Jon Spencer's unhinged garage rock and the ritual intensity of Swans. The band were formed in Cincinnati in the late 1980s by singer/guitarist Peter Aaron and guitarist William Webber. They recorded three studio albums during their career, a self-titled debut in 1995, 'Dead Cool' later the same year, and 'Love in Exile' in 1996, they also released a live album (Live In Exile), an album of outtakes and demos in that same year, entitled 'Oily Cranks', and a compilation, 'Diabolical Boogie' which was released in 2007. 'The Murder of Time' (2009) is probably an interim measure, but it's a nice and remastered introduction to Chrome Cranks. It includes many of the best and best-known Chrome Cranks songs, recorded in a range of studio and live settings.

First of all, thank you for all the responses you've dropped in my shoutbox, posts or e-mail, I hope I can serve more good music this year, so let's start 2010 with Brighton based 'The Mutts'. The Mutts are Chris Murtagh (Vocals), Bryan Shore (Guitar), Sam Burgess (Bass) and Jake Sweetman (drums, he replaced Adam Watson). Taking 60's garage and 70's Detroit mixed with 90's stoner, this 9 track EP/mini album serves everything from rock n' roll to blues, glam, rock, soul and beyond. After the release of a 6-track EP (also posted on this blog), they've released their debut full-album "Life In Dirt" in 2005, followed by this mini-album in 2006. Sadly they disbanded shortly after this release.

This album, 'Shot the Devil' by Seattle-based threesome Gravelroad, has a sound so dark and dirty it kind of oozes out of the speakers and into your ears much like the mud of a Mississippi swamp.

I admit, I'd never heard of these guys before, but what a mindblowing mixture of blues, stoner and metal! Everyone who has eclectic tastes or likes the Melvins, Killdozer and Jesus Lizard stuff, should give this a spin. Hail to the Sludgeswamp for turning me into this!

If you like your blues rock dark and sludgy, Federation X is the band for you. These guys have an off-kilter swagger similar to Jesus Lizard mixed with a bit of the "sick hick" shtick of Killdozer. They also occasionally tread on Sabbath-y sonic territory. There is never any soloing though, and this keeps the music more sinister sounding and prevents it from crossing the line into metal territory.

The music is heavily steeped in blues rock and has a raw, primal sound, and a rusty, post-modern edge keeps it from getting anywhere near boogieville. Things are kept even grottier and more guttural by the fact the trio is made up of two guitarists and a drummer. The songs are dark and black. This is some scary-ass shit.

Wow, WTF, here's another thrilling guitar driven boogiepunk blues band which I've discovered on the Deep Blues Festival line-up. American Relay, consisting Nick Sullivan on guitar and Alex Hebert on drums, bring a sort of whiskey- and fuel-injected fuzzy delta blues between the late R.L. Burnside, Hank III and Deadboy & the Elephantmen's Dax Riggs, if you dig the Black Diamond Heavies, Left Lane Cruiser and the Pack A.D. , than you'll embrace this Denver-based duo as well.

Camaros - Glad, Evil and Bad (2005)

Camaros are a three-piece formed in 2001 in Halden (Norway). Camaros have released two (studio) albums so far ('Romantique' & 'Glad, Evil & Bad'). 'Glad, Evil & Bad' is a damn fine and catchy rock'n'roll album, deeply drenched in the Mississippi-swamps, filled with a infectious hammond. They shared the stage with Ricochets, Hellacopters, Flaming Sideburns, Mustasch among others, and they did a Scandinavian tour with On Trial.

Camaros sadly broke up a few years ago (thx carlcoconut for the info).

Started as a trio in 1992, this Mississippi-based combo recorded their first release in 1993, which was available on cassette only. After they became a quartet they've recorded a couple 7 inches (a self-titled 7" and Pay The Rent 7"). 'Souls On Fire' was their first full-lenght CD, released on Fat Possum-label ( the 'blues' label of R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough). They broke up in 2000, before that they braught us one full-album ('The Lights Are Getting Dim'), two 7 inches ( 'Hit Me/Bad Boy' and '64 Days/We’re All Winners') and an EP, entitled 'Gentlemen Vinyl' (all three were available as vinyl only). Someone has asked me if I could recommend a band which sounds like Audionom, I have told him to check Bailter Space (or Bailterspace), but here's Ikons, also from Sweden, and they have just their first album out. They were formed in 2005 and their influences include everything from Neu! and earlier JAMC to Morrissey and Joy Divison, Audionom, Bailterspace, 1999... it's a brilliant fusion between krautrock, new wave, post-punk and psychedelica. Highly recommended stuff!

Low Point Drains - Low Point Drains (2004)

I was searching this for a long time, but now the 'Mojo' has fulfilled my request, thx Bubba. Now, who the f**k is Low Point Drains ? They started as a duo in '98 consisting Mr. Point (guitar/vocals) and Mr. Drain (drums) and hailing from a place called 'HELLevoetsluis' (the Netherlands). In 2005 they were assisted on bass by ... of course Mr Low. They will kick your ass with 17 filthy trash-garage and sleazy bluesy tracks, and as you already all know, such a gritty, noisy and bluesy reverb-filled garage punk makes me very happy. As far I know, this is their only full-lenght they have released, followed by two 7 inches (Bottle 'O' Whiskey in 2005 and Slovenly 45-series in 2006), I'm even not sure they still exist. And once again, a big thanks goes to the Musical Mojo blogspot.

Sydney-based 'The Mess Hall' is a two-piece drums and guitar combo, they bring a kind of raw, edgy bluesy rock. The band consists of Jed Kurzel (vocals/guitar) and Cec Condon (drums/vocals). 'Notes From a Ceiling' was their third offer, it's an impressive album and suprisingly is the density of the sound that's given by such a two-piece band, danceable beats (listen to Disco1 or Disco2), a fuzzy guitar and reverb plastered cymbals varied with simple acoustic guitar and a lonely voice, yep, this cocktail I will not refuse. The Mess Hall is an outstanding band, a gritty down to earth garage/blues rock band and one of my favorites, that's for sure. Enjoy.

Cuban Heels - Morphine Mama (2002)

Cuban Heels, whose band name refers to a famous brand of cowboy boots, is a five-piece garage blues band from the Netherlands. Cuban Heels have released 3 albums so far, 'Sweet and Lowdown' (2001), 'Morphine Mama' in 2002 and 'Getbucketmusic' followed 3 years later. 'Morphine Mama' is an explosive cocktail of 'The Red Devils' and 'The Fabulous Thunderbirds' well stirred on a Fatpossum-way, it is a raw, dirty and sleazy blues album, this is the perfect music you want to hear in a smoky club on a Saturday night.

And here's another bluesrock duo, Fiub, hailing from Italy and consisting Gabriel Ferrer (vocals and guitar) and Pierangelo Mecca (drums). They met each other in 2003 at a Misfits gig. In 2004 they released their first EP 'The Brown Stripes', which was sold out in no time,. In May 2006 they released their first full-lenght 'Ciubirismeicheuan', which got good critics, both from press and public. Their follow up, entitled ':::U:::' ( in fact it's a 10") was released in April 2008 on vinyl and as free download. On side A ( the Jesus side) you will hear mostly acoustic blues, on Satan's side you get powerful electric riffage, groovy stonerlicks and drifting psychedelic post-punk.

Post Stardom Depression - Ordinary Miracles (2003)

It seems that no one ever has heard of this cool band, Post Stardom Depression. I present you their first (and best ?) full-lenght, hoping they get the attention they deserve. 'Ordinary Miracles' is a rockin', blues-influenced, post-punk explosion, opening with "Monster", where the lead singer is proclaiming "sometimes I just wanna fuck", so you know you're in for a good time, partying, hard rock record that will fulfill even the most jaded of rockers. The whole album keeps you rocking, the buzzing guitars, loud rhythm section, and deep, dark vocals are the perfect combination to keep things tight, energetic and ultimately fun. This Tacoma-based foursome has released one EP ( Sexual Uno, produced by Chriss Goss) and two full-lenghts, 'Ordinary Miracles' and 'Primetime Looks A Lot Like Amateur Night'.

Manual Zombie - Autumn (2009)

First of all, I want to thank the guys (and girl ?) from Manual Zombie for sending this in. Manual Zombie is a promising new band hailing from Brooklyn, New York. On their new (homemade) album, which is scheduled for release on December 25th, you'll hear a variety of styles, going from The Velvet's psychedelia to garage, and Sonic Youth's distortions to blues. Here's a nice review I found on their Myspace-page.

Manual Zombie is a New York/Brooklyn-based psychedelic band (like Sky Picnic), a duo of two guys: Ahmad and Ben. Compared to Sky Picnic, their music is more sinister and far less influenced by 60ies/70ies psychedelic rock. Manual Zombie's sound is at least to some degree rooted in the 90ies grunge, post punk and metal sound (though on tracks like "automatic people" some Sweet-Sister-Ray-VU-Punk is greeting). I'd also say I hear some Black Flag influences, and I especially love that excellent distorted guitar playing. Their other main weapon is the voice - often spooky and menacing with strange spoken word passages:This is a trip to the dark realms of psychedelia. Enjoy!

You wanna make a journey into the music history of the past 40 years, take 'Manual Zombie' as your guide and let them lead you into 60's psychedelia, 70's punk, 80's lofi and 90's grunge era. Enjoy your trip.

Molded from solid Flemish clay, a new promising Belgian stoner formation is born. There aren't to many bands here in Belgium who play groovy (stoner) rock, we have Mogul, Kube, Hulk, Triggerfinger ..., once we had Cowboys & Aliens, Hypnos69 and El Guapo Stuntteam... sadly, these are disbanded. Now we have Mans Ruin, and they have just released their self titled debut (mini) album, including 5 groovy tracks brought in the best stoner rock tradition, although there are some very Helmet-ish hooks in it (who can't remember their astonishing debut 'Meantime'). Anyway, Fu Manchu and Dozer fans, please pay attention to Mans Ruin, 'cause this is good old fashioned stoner rock.

The Flaming Stars are a 'garage noir' band. That’s garage as in loud guitars, valve amps, cheap electric organ and trashcan drums. Formed in December 1994 by ex-Gallon Drunk drummer Max Décharné, they have regularly filled venues such as The Garage, and the LA2, and venues around the country, as well as playing sell-out tours around Europe, Japan and the US. Expect here soulfull baritone 'alcohol' croonings mixed with a remarkably diverse array of musical styles, such as psychedelic rock, shoegaze and surf. 'Named and Shamed' is this UK-based quintet sixth effort, which was released on Alternative Tentacles.

I had posted this a few months back, but it seems that the link was dead, so this gives me a good opportunity to re-post a Laughing Hyenas album again. This record combines the two best works of the band 12 year history. Sadly, they split up in 1995, shortly after the 'Hard Times' tour. Drawing influences ranging from Howlin' Wolf to the Stooges, this is a must have for those who love the blues ladden post punk aggression. This was the 4th release from this Southeast Michigan band.

Chris Con Carne is a Bellingham, WA duo featuring Chris Lamb on Mississippi delta slide guitar and Dan Lowinger on drums (he's also the guitarist of The Footstompin' Trio). More than just another duo, this two-piece has quite a following in the NW, spreading the gospel in bars and taverns in towns large and small. No other band conjures up the sound, feel and smell of Bellingham's world famous 3-B Tavern like these boys. Chris Con Carne is a Bellingham, WA, duo that consists of Chris Lamb on Delta blues-influenced slide guitar and Dan Lowinger clattering away on furious, buckety drums. On Concarnage, the pair's raw-recorded primal blues falls somewhere in between the White Stripes and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But Chris Con Carne is most successful when slashing away at instrumentals, such as the (barely blues) hard garage sound of "Math Rock" or the more blues-influenced "Burden of Proof." As a vocalist, Lamb often opts for histrionics over feel, growling and snorting his way to near-parody (à la Spencer), and that somewhat undermines the effectiveness of some tracks -- though he does offer an able reading of Son House's "Preaching' Blues." Overall, however, this is a solid effort that sails on the back of Lamb's blistering slide and the duo's cheeky and gritty garage aggression. (source: All Music Guide)

Brand new album by Lincoln, NE’s favorite garage sons, and their third for Alive records. This time the gang went to Costa Mesa, CA, to record "Big Deal. What’s He Done Lately?" (the title references a quote from Johnny Ramone about Phil Spector) at The Distillery under the guidance of engineer/producer Mike McHugh (known to produce some of the most heinous, blown-out sounds this side of the galaxy, including Black Lips, Jon Spencer and Andre Williams). The result is considerably more fuzzed than their previous work with Detroit producer Jim Diamond but still pummels. The main characteristic of this album is its heat. Analog from start to finish. Mattias Hellberg and The White Moose: Out Of The Frying Pan Into The Woods (2009)

Mattias Hellberg, former Hellacopters-member, has recruited fellow musicians from The (International) Noise Conspiracy and The Whyte Seeds to form 'The White Moose. “Out Of The Frying Pan, Into The Woods” is the result of Mattias’ lifelong love affair with music, a mix of early influences and new findings, accompanied by drummer Ludwig Dahlberg (from The (International) Noise Conspiracy), and Henrik Lindén on bass and Olle Hagberg on keyboards (both from The Whyte Seeds and Fox Machine). As their press release from Sweden says: “Filled to the brim with tripped-out, sitar drenched psych rock jams reminiscent of early Funkadelic, Captain Beefheart, Allman Brothers and 13th Floor Elevators”, sometimes it does remind me to The Black Keys mixed up with BRMC's 'Howl'.

Gallon Drunk - The Rotten Mile (2008)

After a hiatus of five years Gallon Drunk came back with, in my opinion, their best album for over a decade. If you aren't familiar with Gallon Drunk yet, than is 'The Rotten Mile' a damn good introduction to their aggressive, sleazy and dark blues sound (most standout track are 'All Hands Lost at Sea, 'Christmas', 'Down at the Harbour', Put The Bolt in the Door' and my favourit 'Running Out of Time'). If you dig Nick Cave's Grinderman, than you will adore this as well, that's for sure.

Here's a short biography: formed in London in 1988, with a sound characterised by a swamp rock sound, is noted for its dark subject matter. The lead vocalist is James Johnston, who is also a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Faust. He has played and toured with the Bad Seeds since 1993's 'Let Love In' album and contributed electric organ (a trademark element of the Gallon Drunk sound) to the 'Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus' album and tour (2004).
Gallon Drunk's popularity and visible profile arguably peaked in 1992/1993 with the release of their second album 'From The Heart of Town'. In their twenty-year career they have released six studio albums, which 'The Rotten Mile' was te last one.

Pearlene - Murder Blues & Prayer (2003)

Lets start this last month of 2009 with a heavy and psychedelic/garage blues trip from a Cincinnati-based combo.
This band got its ass on the road playing coast-to-coast US and UK gigs with some of this eras more explosive acts such as, Dead Meadow, The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras and Bellrays, as well as blues and punk survivors like T-Model Ford and Dead Moon. With the aid of several drummers and contributions from members of the Soledad Brothers, Glaser and Ebaugh went on to record two raucous stomp blues records, a self tilted album released by Sympathy for The Record Industry and Murder Blues and Prayer on the L.A. indie label Dimmak. Pearlene went on to get several lengthy features in Fader magazine and Murder Blues was singled out by Denise Sullivan of Rolling Stone as one of her top 10 albums of the year. Though “twangy, bluesy, dirty-ass soul-rock boogie” clichés may apply to some extent, there’s always been something else at work here. As one critic said about their sophomore release “they have a live impromptu approach that would normally give them a fun sound. (Last FM)

I haven't much time to write a review, so here's a nice review I found on the net which will give you a good description on what you may expect on this album. Enjoy.

Devil Eyes' self-titled album doesn't quite replicate their guitar-smashing performance at HPX, but it comes close. Inspired by early rock 'n' roll, the Montreal trio channels the wild, dance-roots of the genre. Devil Eyes jumps across surf, rockabilly, punk, psychedelic blues and Old Time Relijun-esque jazz. But the focus doesn't change---each track, in its own way, offers up a teeth-grinding reckless riot. While others pointlessly try to perfect rock 'n' roll, Devil Eyes simply embraces it and want you to jump in for a wild high speed ride in their supercharged 1957 Thunderbird of an album. On Band of Skulls' debut album you'll hear influences going from '70s blues-folk to '90s garage-rock and 2000's acoustic-pop. The band is very big on sounding raw like the choppy riffs lining 'Light Of The Morning', 'Death By Diamonds And Pearls' (this sounds like the f**** Stripes), 'I Know What I Am' and "Patterns". The smoky blues-folk tint of "Blood" is reminiscent of '70s classic rock, and the dance-rock springs in "Hollywood Bowl" give the song a dance-club vibe. Trust me, this is a very strong release from this young U.K.-based trio. For fans of...course, The White Stripes, The Kills, The Raconteurs, The Duke Spirit, The Pack A.D., ...

Marbles - Ready to Ride EP (2009)

Finally, back home after quite a stormy week. Let's kick off the weekend with some killer stoner tunes from Portugal. This Lisbon-based trio were founded in Montijo in '95. They started as a quintet, but in 2007 two of the original members left the band. During their twelve year career they have recorded three demo's, 'Sleepy Time' (1996), 'Apollo 9' (2000) and 'Slow Desert Punk' in 2004. Now they have recorded a CD/EP which you can download for free on Sonic Infusion records.

Hello=Fire is Dean Fertita's first solo album. Dean's first band was The Waxwings in the late 1990's. They released three albums and the band's most popular song, "Fragile Girl" was covered by The White Stripes. After The Waxwings broke up in 2004, Fertita was recruited by Brendan Benson to play keyboard on Benson's two-man British acoustic tour, and later during The Raconteurs tour in support of the 'Broken Boy Soldiers'-album. After that he joined Queens of the Stone Age as their new keyboardist and additional guitarist to support the 'Era Vulgaris'-album. Currently Fertita is a member in Jack White's 'The Dead Weather', featuring Alison Mosshart (The Kills) and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs).

Fertita's first solo effort, Hello=Fire, released the debut single "Nature of Our Minds" in August. The album features guest appearances by fellow Queens of the Stone Age bandmates Troy Van Leeuwen, Joey Castillo and Michael Shuman, as well as Brendan Benson and the Afghan Whigs' Michael Horrigan. The music? Well , of course you hear the Raconteurs/White Stripes/QOTSA-elements, what's not a bad thing, it's just a catchy (and poppy) rock album with laid-back slacker vocals.

You always want to know how the Datsuns, DFA 1979 and YYY's would sound like if they were in the same studio at the same time, check this amazing new Australian (Sydney) band. The Vignettes are: Joel (guitar) and Katy B ( drums), yeah I know, another male guitarist/singer and female drummer, but this duo sounds quite sensational, this is a damn catchy, though raw and energetic band, you have to check 'em out here. I hope they will release a full-lenght soon, this needs/deserves much more attention.

'Love, Not Reason' is 'The Paybacks' third effort, released in 2006 on their own Savage Jams record label. The Paybacks, a four-piece hailing from Detroit, formed in 1999 from the ashes of Detroit rock vets Rocket 455, The Hentchmen and Ten Highand. The Paybacks are led by singer / guitarist Wendy Case, she's assisted by guitarist Danny Methric (from The Muggs), drummer Bill Hafer and bassist John Szymanski (also organ and music box).

Is it 'punk', is it 'garage', is it... it's a straight up rock album.

Daydream Nation (name borrowed from a Sonic Youth album) are (were ?) a Canadian band which have created the perfect blend of cool, psychedelic rock and modern shoegaze. With lush, swirling fuzzy guitars with dreamy, moody vocals and a powerful driving beat. Daydream Nation deserves to find a wider audience. Each song on this album is great, with gentle nods to bands like BRMC and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Speaking of BJM, frontman Hunter Crowley is a former member of BJM and Warlocks.

Named after a Bowie-song, Sweethead is the new brainchild of QOTSA's guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, joined by Norm Block and Eddie Nappi ( both from Mark Lanegan Band) and Serrina Sims. Of course there are some similarities with QOTSA, but Sims' vocals gives it a more sultry smoky touch, while I hear some echoes of NIN also (Turned Our Backs). File this between QOTSA and The Spores, to stay in the family.

Two Russian Cowboys were founded near Kortrijk (Belgium) in the late 80's. "Unplugged Lowbat - The Early Days" is the first (double) album of Luc Dufourmont & co. Their style is very diverse: rock, pop, country, a capella, folk, musical you name it, you find it here. The album starts with an 'a cappella' version of The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK", followed by "Gegingegeugengi", a 'word' used as rhythm (means, don't you have a memory) sung in West-Flemish. Lee Marvin shows up in "666", and "Paint it Black" (Haunting Things Away). "Guerre Allah Tele" is Gainsbourg mixed with the ( in Belgium well-known) Keno-tune. Further you'll recognise Ozark Henry's "Sweet Instigator", Stooges' " I Wanna Be Your Dog", Smiths .... Keyword is here: HUMOR. This is amusing, well-dosed musical entertainment. No much copies were pressed, so all copies were selled on their gigs. All those tracks plus a couple of new songs have been re-recorded by a new driven line-up. So here we go, welcome to the killer sound of Chili Cold Blood! CCB plays raw, howlin', and boozy southern electric honky tonk rhythm'n'blues dirtyin' it into some darkly post-punk sceneries, or think of R.L. Burnside & J.L. Hooker meeting some gloomy Black Sabbath-sound. Real bad-man-blues thing with hypnotic and circular riffs that reminds as of Mississippi Delta/North Hills and Texas style licks as dark Tommy Iommi's visionary musical intuitions. So, as requested, here's Ricochets' final release. Apparently, Alex Kloster-Jensenrom (Ricochets and MMC) and Frode Jacobsen and Bez Farazollahi (respectively Madrugada and MMC) started a new band. They are assisted by Anders Møller (Gluecifer, e.o...) and Dag Stigberg. Their new project is entitled Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O, named after a My Midnight Creeps-song (appeared on Histamin). I read there’s been given hints about grooves, mystique, 'afro-blues and euro-soul'... I'm very excited to hear this. Thanks for the info, Joop.

Ricochets - The Ghost of Our Love (2003)

Second release from this Fredrikstad-based quartet. They were first heard in the Oslo club circuit in 1997, but they had several problems, and after they've released their debut album, they broke up. Suprisingly, in early 2003, they came back with this great album, "The ghost of our love", which got very good reviews. "The ghost of our love" continues where "Slo-mo Suicide" stopped. Deep, dark (garage)rock, but with more elements of rythm&blues. It has elements from the sexties to the early seventies, (swinging hard guitars, the organ, the desperatly high pitched vocals). Keywords are: Nick Cave, The Doors, Yardbirds... Robert Burås (Madrugada) features on the title track.

Ricochets - Slo-mo Suicide (2001)

Here's, in my opinion, another underestimated band from Norway. Ricochets formed in Fredrikstad in 1999, and have quickly risen to the top of the Norwegian rock stratosphere. Slo-mo Suicide was their debut album followed by "The Ghost of Our Love" in 2003. They released their last album in 2005, titled “Isolation”. They gained local recognition as a solid live-band next to Madrugada and My Midnight Creeps (MMC= Alex Kloster-Jensen from Ricochets and Robert Burås from Madrugada). If you like Madrugada and MMC you'll definately love this as well. Enjoy.

'My idle Hands' was the second album from this exuberantly disagreeable, psycho, fucked-up blues band. Be prepared for a terrorising psycho-punk-blues attack, like the Jesus Lizard did before them, Penthouse take the traditional parts of blues and twists to a barely recognisable sonic assault. River City Tanlines is Alicja Trout's new brainchild. Alicja plays with bands such as the Lost Sounds and Mouserocket, she also runs a label (Contaminated Records) and a recording studio as well!!! What's all the more remarkable is that each band actually manages to have its own personality, and on River City Tanlines' first full-lenght, they conjure up a distinct blend of garage rock, hard rock and pop-punk. Yep, back home again. First of all, thanks for your comments on my posts and in my shoutbox. So, back to music now, let's continue with some 'good ol' rock'n'blues' , here's 'Cut Down', the first (digital) album from Cut in The Hill Gang. CITHG is a new rock/blues/soul trio hailing from Covington and formed by Johnny Walker (guitarist and mastermind of the Soledad Brothers). Cut Down features five songs of the 'Hung Up' LP (which I posted a few weeks back), the b-side of a 7" ('Sugar Never Tasted So Good', a tremendous White Stripes cover) and 6 brand new songs. Enjoy.

Bluebird - Hot Blood (2002)

Here's a band which deserves much more attention, 'cause, in my opinion, Hot Blood is a very underrated album. This L.A-based power-psych-punk five-some brings some nice melodic guitar textures and tasteful jams which are drenched in 60's psychedelia, 70's warped skronk and MC5's throttled power-riff breakdowns ( speaking of MC5, Wayne Kramer makes a guest appearance on 'Beautiful Believer'). Similar artists are: Swervedriver, Meat Puppets, Wool... They've shared the stage with many artists, such as Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, QOTSA, Fu Manchu, Warlocks, Dead Meadow and much much more. This is my only Bluebird-CD i own, is there someone who has more Bluebird-albums? I would be very grateful if you would share those, thx in advance.

Influenced by bands as Led Zep and a sound similar to Wolfmother (maybe those who are disappointed with 'Cosmic Egg', try this), here's The Suede Brothers, a trio founded in Cleveland, Ohio. Because I'm a bit lazy tonight, here's a review I found on the net.

"In Cleveland we have a form of music that we affectionately called Rust-Belt rock and roll. It's less of a genre and more of an attitude. It's rock and roll music that's low on fashion and filler and big on volume. Here in Cleveland, we also have this band that perfectly embodies the sentiments of Rust-Belt rock, The Suede Brothers. Originally a duo that blasted blues based jams out of a barn in Perry, Ohio. Listening to The Suede Brothers, you'll hear elements of old time blues music as well as large riffs and bombastic drums that date back to the hard charging Seventies. After releasing their debut album 'Going Down' (which you find in my archives also), recorded Green Hornet three 45rpm vinyl albums, which 'Heavyweights' was the last one. Expect on this very rare album a sultry mix of stirred up sixtiespunk and glorious (surf)instrumentals. With an unusual lin-up (organ, mouthharp, guitar & drums) they bring a lot of different styles (blues, soul, punk, surf...). 'Heavyweights' shows more convincing than ever the different sides of Green Hornet: Exciting 'Rockers' and trashy instrumentals take turns with soulful ballads. .

Heavy Trash - Midnight Soul Serenade (2009)

Here's the third release from Jon Spencer's and Matt Verta-Ray's Heavy Trash. It's entitled 'Midnight Soul Serenade' and it's a blast of a record. It was recorded at Matt's New York Hed Studios and Toe Rag in London. This is dark and devilish rockabilly flirting with punk and blues, 'Midnight Soul Serenade' is a slightly darker and brilliantly matured dose of Heavy Trash. On almost every track you'll hear Verta-Ray deep and spulsating guitars while Spencer is crooning.

The Delta 72 - The R&B of Membership (1996)

'The R&B of Membership' was The Delta 72's debut full-lenght, released on Touch&Go Records. It's an exciting and fiery mix of 60's organ rock and gritty southern soul, some distorted guitars and postpunk hooks, greasy farfisa organ riffs, harmonica blares and screaming blues slides. After releasing 3 full-lenghts and several EP's and 7" albums, they disbanded mid 2001.
